Adventures in Connecticut Appalachian Trail to Bear Mountain will give you the adventure and views you seek. Lion Heads Trail follows the Appalachian Trail to the top of Bear Mountain. This trail is the longest route about 3 miles but the trail has resting points and a well packed day pack should get you through. Along the way you will see creeks, waterfalls, wildflowers, wildlife and views of mountain valleys that only can be viewed along the trail. It would be a great starting point to hike the Appalachian Trail to your hearts content. There are scenic drives along the Connecticut River that you can drive along and you will get views of the area but for the ultimate look you should climb aboard the Quinnetukut II. On this open air river boat perched on a wooden bench with a breeze in your face you will pass under the French King Bridge built in 1932. The river banks at first full of unbroken forests of pine and hardwoods, changing to cliffs of rock covered in mosses and low growing plants till you reach the marsh grasses. Bald eagles are in this area you will certainly see geese and ducks. The Thimbles islands called by the Mattabec Indians "the beautiful sea rocks" are 365 of the of the rocks known as the thimble islands. Most range in size from a half an acre to 12 acres. You can get there by Kayak or by taking a tour boat. Taking a tour you will get close to the islands and learn some of their unique history. From December to early May there is the opportunity to see migrating Harbor Seals. Take a day trip stay on shore and enjoy a great seafood dinner at one of the local haunts. Adventures are available in Connecticut and once you have enjoyed playing here you will want to come back again and again.
