Lakshadweep, A Heaven For Adventure Enthusiasts

India, the most visited oriental destination is mainly known for its Hindu spiritualism, marvelous Taj Mahal, mighty Himalayas, forts and palaces, etc. But a tour to the off-the-beaten path like Lakshadweep, the only surviving coral island could be more mesmerizing. Adventure freaks will be sure to have nice time in Lakshadweep, mostly known for its coral reefs. The literal meaning of Lakshadweep in Malayalam language is 'thousand islands', yet it is an archipelago of 36 islands. Among the islands, only 10 islands are inhabited.

Covering an area of 36 square kilometers, Lakshadweep earns the status of smallest Union territory of India. The inhabited islands are Agatti, Amini, Andrott, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kiltan and Minicoy.

Why is a visit to Lakshadweep more enthralling? The islands of Lakshadweep are located in the middle of the Arabian Sea on the south coast of India. Reaching an island is itself thrilling as it is completely separated from mainland India. One can reach Lakshadweep flying from Kochi Airport of Kerala or taking a sea cruise from Kochi harbor. Agatti is the only airport in Lakshadweep maintained by the Airports Authority of India. There are passenger ships which are operated from Kochi to Agatti.

The main islands are ideal for water sports, the islands are: Kavaratti, Kalpeni, Minicoy and Kadmat. Kavaratti is the administrative head of the Union territory. Touring the islands of Lakshadweep one can explore the rich marine life of the underwater. The beaches are also ideal for sunbathing and swimming. The tribes lead a simple life in complete harmony with nature. Fishing and coconut cultivations are the main source of livelihood for them.

Replete with coral reefs and sandy beaches, the islands of Lakshadweep attract the adventure buffs. One can have the fun of adventure sports like Scuba diving, Yachting, Pedal boating, Kayaking, Canoeing, Swimming, and Snorkeling in Lakshadweep.
